Here’s the Kicker – English Phrase

What Does it Mean?

When a person says, “Here’s the kicker,” they are using an English expression to reveal something that is meant to be a surprise.  There are colloquial / regional variations on this phrase, such as:

  • here’s the kick
  • there’s the kicker
  • the real kick is

“I waited four hours to see the doctor, took a bunch of tests, but here’s the kicker… it turns out that all the headaches I’ve been having are only because I need glasses.”

“John got fired from his job the other day, but the real kick is that we found out his boss lost her job a couple of days later.”
